On occassion we get emails or calls from people visiting Ecuador who want to help make a difference. they find a dog (or cat) in dire need and really are unsure of what they can do to bring over the animal to the US and give them a better life.
Here are a few questions we have heard and some things that may help.
What are the US Customs regulations regarding bringing a dog back with me?
The process is not complicated at all. US Customs only requires a "travel health certifciate" signed by a veterinarian in ecuador. Amigo Fiel can help take care of that for you at cost -- for a minimal fee of $20 for the certificate of vaccination, plus another $30 for vaccinations and deworming.
You need that certificate of health in order to travel to the u.s. It's the only requirement.
What do I do about travel?
Please contact Amigo Fiel for help with travel arrangements. They know better than anyone what you need to do to get a dog to the US. You will also need a crate to transport the puppy, and depending on the weight of the dog, you can buy a crate for about $100. The cost of the airline ticket is another $100 if the dog travels with you. If the dog travels by himself as cargo the cost for a small dog is about $300.
Continental airlines is the best and is the only airline we use. They have the best pet safe travel program with a separate compartment in cargo for pets. American airlines is also and option, although we have never flown pets from ecuador through them. They require an independent agent to make all travel arrangements for which you have to pay a separate fee. Continental does not require such agent....you can deal directly with them.
Do you all know of any good veternarians or doggie daycares that I could take the pup to get get checked out and house until my trip ends?
Please contact Amigo Fiel for any healtht certificate and boarding help.
Thank you for saving this puppy (or kitty), and please dont give up on him.....you can bring them to the US and save him from a life of misery, and probly a cruel death if he stays behind. Once he is the US, we can help you find a good home for him if you cannot keep him.
